Private Hire Vehicle Driver – Home-to-School & Community Transport (Self-Employed)
About the Role
We are looking for experienced, self-employed private hire drivers who already hold a valid Thurrock Borough Council PHV licence and their own suitable vehicle, and who are ready to deliver excellent transport services as part of the OnRoute network. This is an ideal opportunity for drivers who want the flexibility of self-employment while benefiting from the structure, route security, and professional support that comes with working alongside a licenced operator.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate assigned home-to-school or community transport routes across Essex and Thurrock
- Collect and drop off passengers safely and punctually in accordance with route schedules
- Build professional, courteous relationships with passengers, parents, carers, and school staff
- Complete daily pre-journey vehicle walkaround checks and report any defects to the Operations Manager before the journey commences
- Follow all OnRoute Standard Operating Procedures, safeguarding policies, and Thurrock Borough Council licensing conditions
- Maintain accurate records of journeys and any incidents in the format required by OnRoute
- Report all incidents or concerns within the timescales set out in company policy
- Maintain your vehicle to the standard required by your PHV licence and OnRoute's fleet policies
- Attend any mandatory briefings, training, or compliance checks required by OnRoute
- Act as an ambassador for OnRoute Transport Group at all times when on route
What You Need
- A valid, current Thurrock Borough Council Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) Licence — this is a strict requirement
- A suitable, roadworthy vehicle that has been licenced by Thurrock City Council
- A full valid UK driving licence held for a minimum of one year
- A valid Enhanced DBS certificate with barred list checks (or willingness to obtain one before commencing)
- The right to work in the United Kingdom as a self-employed individual
- Appropriate motor insurance for private hire use
- A professional, patient, and safeguarding-conscious approach to working with children and vulnerable adults
- Reliability and punctuality — route schedules are fixed and passengers depend on you

Safeguarding Notice
This role involves the transport of children and vulnerable adults and meets the definition of regulated activity under both child and adult workforce legislation. All self-employed drivers must hold a valid Enhanced DBS with barred list checks before commencing any route. Engagement is conditional on a satisfactory DBS outcome.
